The article Chemical, mineralogical, microstructural and engineering properties of tropical soils stabilized with the combined and individual use of different types of steel slag is authored by graduate Emerson Cordeiro Lopes, as a result of his doctoral research, which was supervised by Prof. Taciano Oliveira da Silva. Student Gustavo Nalon also signs the work, as do teachers Heraldo Pitanga (DEC), Leonardo Pedroti (DEC), José Maria Carvalho (DEC), Eduardo Araúdo (DPF) and Klaus Rodrigues (DEC).
The research evaluated synergistic effects provided by the combination of EAFSF and LFSF in stabilizing clayey and sandy soils. The study provides a detailed microscale analysis of raw materials and slag-soil mixtures, and positive synergistic behavior was observed when combining 10% LFSF and 5% EAFSF (by weight of soil), which provided a structural arrangement that led to increases in compressive strength and CBR.
