Researchers from the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering published an article in the journal Buildings

The article Experimental Analysis of Watertightness Performance of Interfaces between Masonry and Steel Structures Subjected to Accelerated Aging proposes a method for treating common interface joints between masonry and steel structures with the application of an EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) elastomer membrane to ensure the durability and tightness of interface joints when they are subject to aging triggered by exposure to heat and thermal shock. The authors showed that the solution can be effective in preventing water leaks at the interfaces between masonry and structural elements, thus contributing to ensuring the durability of the steel structure.

The authors of the article are graduates Alex de Freitas Bhering, Rayane Neves Franco, Mariana Araújo dos Santos and Lorena de Melo Sathler. Professors Leonardo Gonçalves Pedroti, Gustavo de Souza Veríssimo and José Luiz Rangel Paes signed the work, which also has Professor Humberto Varum, from the University of Porto, as co-author.
