The Graduate Program in Civil Engineering at UFV welcomes Professor Xavier Romão from the University of Porto

The Graduate Program in Civil Engineering at UFV is honored to welcome Professor Xavier Romão from the University of Porto. During March, the researcher from the renowned Portuguese institution will be giving lectures in the graduate program and presentations for the academic community associated with the Department of Civil Engineering and other interested parties.

Professor Romão holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (1999); a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering Structures from FEUP (2002), and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Porto (2012). His main research interests include advanced modeling of seismic behavior of structures; seismic design of buildings; assessment of seismic safety of existing constructions; risk management in existing constructions, including cultural heritage; modeling, probabilistic assessment, and statistical analysis.

Professor Romão is the vice-president of ICOMOS-ICORP, the International Scientific Committee on Risk Preparedness of the International Council on Monuments and Sites; a member of the Board of the Portuguese Society of Seismic Engineering; FEUP’s representative in the Sub-Commission of the National Civil Protection Commission; a member of the UNESCO roster for culture in emergencies, and a member of the Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance (StEER) Network.

On March 11th, at 6:30 PM, in the auditorium of CCE, Professor Xavier Romão will be giving the lecture “Earthquakes: a constant threat and a challenge for engineering.”

On March 18th, at 7:00 PM, in the auditorium of LABENGE, the professor will be giving a lecture titled “Preservation of Historical Heritage: Good Practices of Portuguese Engineering and Architecture.” We invite the entire academic community and those interested in the topics to attend the event.
